On 15 December, 2023 at about 9:30 PM, Coquille Police Officers responded to the Coquille High School for a report of an altercation that had occurred. Officers learned that a male adult had been found in the women's bathroom using a cell phone to record female juveniles using the bathroom and changing clothes after an athletic tournament which included girls from schools throughout the south coast region. When some of the girls realized they were being recorded one of the girls notified her father who entered the bathroom and forcibly detained the male who was inside of the bathroom stall. Other parents then called 911 to report the incident. Although there were signs of an injury the detained man declined to discuss them with Officers. As a result of this investigation, 59 year old Patrick Laird of Coquille was arrested and initially charged with violations of ORS 163.686 Encouraging Child Sex Abuse Il and ORS 163.701 Invasion of Personal Privacy in the First Degree. Both of these offenses are classified as C Felony crimes in Oregon. After his arrest Patrick Laird was transported to the Coos County Jail where he was lodged.
