CCSO: On September 4th, 2023, around 10:07 pm, Deputy Z. Smith was patrolling the Barview area of Coos Bay. Deputy Smith observed a pickup truck driver commit a traffic violation, so he stopped the vehicle in a driveway on South Spring Road. While approaching the vehicle, Deputy Smith observed the driver moving rapidly toward the vehicle's passenger. When he arrived at the driver's side window, Deputy Smith saw the driver, James Albrecht (55), sitting in his passenger's lap, trying to change positions with him quickly. Mr. Albrecht looked at Deputy Smith while slowly finishing switching seats and getting situated in the passenger seat. Coos County Dispatch told Deputy Smith that Mr. Albrecht had his driving privileges suspended at the Misdemeanor level. Mr. Albrecht initially insisted that he was not driving the vehicle despite being seen switching spots with his passenger. Ultimately Mr. Albrecht admitted to driving the vehicle and said he attempted to switch seats to avoid going to jail. Deputy Smith took Mr. Albrecht into custody and transported him to the Coos County Jail for Driving While Suspended at the Misdemeanor level. Mr. Albrecht was booked and released from custody after processing.
