Police say 29-year-old Ricky Potter was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation when he got out and started to run. The officer immediately recognized Potter, authorities said, and he had a warrant out for his arrest for a parole violation. Police say this isn't the first time Potter has tried to elude police; they say he has a lengthy criminal history including 'resisting an officer' and weapons and drug possession. Police say Potter ran into the backyard of a nearby home and reached into his pocket; that's when the officer deployed his taser, but one of the probes missed. "When a suspect reaches to a place that you can't see and it's in direct non-compliance to a lawful order, the officer needs to protect himself and others by taking that level of force necessary to both stop the activity that the suspect is doing as well as to effect the arrest," explained North Bend Police Chief Robert Kappelman. Potter ran another block and a half before he was caught. He was taken to the Coos County Jail and charged with possession of methamphetamine, parole violation and 3rd degree escape.
