6:24 am - the North Coos 911 Center received a call that a man had been found with a gunshot wound near Umpqua Dairy, 2640 Ocean Blvd in Coos Bay. CBPD officers responded to the area and found the man was deceased. 9 am - CBPD taped off a home at 765 Michigan where known career criminal William Averill lives. The front door was ajar when police arrived and it had signs of forced entry. 3:30 pm - CBPD announced the deceased as William Averill, known career criminal, and are currently looking for his truck (silver dodge dakota ZJM817 with light bar on top). Additionally, they are looking to contact the occupants of a dark-colored SUV who flagged down a passing motorist and requested help regarding this incident. 4:50 pm - CBPD announced a person of interest Jason Lynn Crouch from the Portland area (photo attached). 5:05 pm - Douglas County reported they had located the missing silver dodge dakota. Next day - "CBPD is requesting information from anyone who saw individuals or activity near the vehicle belonging to the homicide victim while it was parked along Highway 38. Mr. Averill's vehicle, a silver 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup, was parked along Highway 38 approximately five miles west of Elkton on December 12, 2023" Dec 15 - Per CBPD, Crouch is no longer a person of interest.
