On Thursday, April 20, the Coos Bay Police Department investigated a reported residential burglary in the 300 block of 10th Avenue in the Eastside area of Coos Bay. During the burglary, police say a large gun safe was stolen containing several firearms, watches, and jewelry, as well as other items from inside the home. Later that night the department received information that 35-year-old Coos Bay resident Beau Stemen was responsible for the burglary, police said. Officers obtained a search warrant to search Stemen’s residence at 209 Merchant Avenue, also in the Eastside area. The search took place on April 21 with assistance from members of the Coos County Emergency Response Team, Oregon State Police, Coquille Tribal Police, and South Coast Interagency Narcotics Team. Police say several of the firearms, watches, jewelry, and other items were recovered from inside Stemen’s residence. Stemen was arrested for a probation violation and transported to the Coos County Jail, as was another resident of the home, 35-year-old Michael Weathers. A third man, Richard Sweider, was arrested and transported to the Coos County Jail for an unrelated warrant out of Josephine County. Four other occupants of the residence were interviewed, but were not taken into custody at this time, police said. The burglary is still under investigation and criminal charges will be forwarded to the Coos County District Attorney at the conclusion of the investigation, according to authorities. There are still four shotguns missing along with the gun safe and some additional items stolen during the burglary, police said.

According to police, D and H Logging reported a red Toyota pickup with two men inside had taken items from a vehicle parked at their logging site. The site foreman reported the vehicle had left. Police said the logging site was on Moore Mill Lumber Company property and the subjects had trespassed to commit the theft. A sheriff’s deputy officer from Myrtle Point Police Dept. responded and located the vehicle near milepost 1 on Catching Creek with the two men inside. Police arrested 30-year-old Cody L. Johnson and 35-year-old Beau Stemen, both of Coos Bay. The initial report by the logging crew stated a can full can of gas and some rope were taken out of the vehicle. During the investigation with the two men, police said the can of gas was recovered, which turned out to be coolant, as well as the rope. In addition, police said a firearm was seized due to an obliterated serial number and short barrel. Investigation into the firearms issue is ongoing, police said. Johnson was arrested for Criminal Trespass in the 2nd Degree and Theft in the 3rd Degree. Beau Stemen was arrested on a probation violation. Both were lodged at the Coos County Jail with Johnson being released on his own recognizance. Stemen was being held without bail.
