On Thursday, April 20, the Coos Bay Police Department investigated a reported residential burglary in the 300 block of 10th Avenue in the Eastside area of Coos Bay. During the burglary, police say a large gun safe was stolen containing several firearms, watches, and jewelry, as well as other items from inside the home. Later that night the department received information that 35-year-old Coos Bay resident Beau Stemen was responsible for the burglary, police said. Officers obtained a search warrant to search Stemen’s residence at 209 Merchant Avenue, also in the Eastside area. The search took place on April 21 with assistance from members of the Coos County Emergency Response Team, Oregon State Police, Coquille Tribal Police, and South Coast Interagency Narcotics Team. Police say several of the firearms, watches, jewelry, and other items were recovered from inside Stemen’s residence. Stemen was arrested for a probation violation and transported to the Coos County Jail, as was another resident of the home, 35-year-old Michael Weathers. A third man, Richard Sweider, was arrested and transported to the Coos County Jail for an unrelated warrant out of Josephine County. Four other occupants of the residence were interviewed, but were not taken into custody at this time, police said. The burglary is still under investigation and criminal charges will be forwarded to the Coos County District Attorney at the conclusion of the investigation, according to authorities. There are still four shotguns missing along with the gun safe and some additional items stolen during the burglary, police said.
