Michael Gertson accepted a plea bargain, pleaded guilty on August 12 to manslaughter in the death of Jesse Hayes, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Hayes was beaten to death at a house in Coos Bay and his body was found covered with trash outside a Coos Bay warehouse four days later. The victim's family is unhappy with the 10-year sentence, believing it is not long enough. The two other defendants in the case, George Ivanoff and Jesse Longhenry, remain in jail awaiting trial early next year.

Jessie Hayes, 34, was found dead in a side yard used for trash disposal at 675 Hemlock Ave. after two 911 calls. The incident occurred inside apartment one where Hayes was allegedly beaten to death by blunt force trauma causing heavy bleeding to the brain; the suspects also attempted to strangle him. Michael Lee Gertson and Jessie Jack Longhenry were arrested and charged within 24 hours. A Coos County grand jury indicted George Michael Ivanoff, 48, as a third suspect. No weapon such as a bat was used; the victim was beaten to death. An autopsy was performed the same day the body was discovered.
